Rhino League Volleyball

The Lab Zappers, left, meet team Yo Quiero Viagra in the courtyard of the Biological Laboratories before a crowd of lunchers and rhinos. Volleyball matches occur at noon and 1 p.m. and sometimes in the evenings at that venue every weekday from June 8 through August 27, followed by a two-week playoff season, a championship match September 11, and the presentation of the Rhino Trophy. Graduate student Bill Korinek, commissioner of the league, now in its tenth season, oversees 26 teams--comprised mostly of postdocs and graduate students with the odd administrator or faculty member--representing the departments of chemistry and chemical biology, molecular and cellular biology, and organismic and evolutionary biology. Interviewed near mid season, Lab Zapper Christine Crowley, second from left, who works in the administrative office of molecular and cellular biology, disclosed her team's record to date--two wins and three losses. "But that doesn't tell the whole story of our transformation," she stressed. "We've practiced so hard in the past two weeks we've become as good as a professional team. It's like a Hollywood film, really." - Article courtesy of Harvard Magazine, 1999
