Introduction Meet the Community Events & Activities

Every fall our Annual Research Retreat brings students and faculty to an attractive resort, where incoming graduate students get a chance to meet the individual members of the department and learn about their research.
The Annual Holiday Party at Tommy Doyle's, as well as the Halloween Party (usually hosted in one of the private residences), offer another great opportunity to go celebrate with your friends and colleagues.
The Annual Friends & Family Summer Picnic offers another opportunity to get together with all the members of the department and their families to enjoy an afternoon of great food and a variety of outdoor activities.     The Biolabs courtyard hosts Rhino League Volleyball every summer. Members of the community exercise and socialize while they master the bump-set-spike.

Every Friday (TGIF) at 4pm pizza and beer are being served for everyone in the courtyard of the Bauer Center to end the week catching up with colleagues and friends in a distinctly relaxed atmosphere.

Culture

A wide selection of museums such as the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, the Busch-Reisinger, the Fogg Art, the Straus Center for Conservation and the Peabody (with its world famous glass flower collection) are just a few steps away from MCB.

A wide range of concerts; dance, opera and theater performances; exhibitions and films are offered on a daily basis. Check the Harvard Gazette for listings.

Athletic facilities

The Athletic facilities at the Hemenway Gymnasium at Harvard Law School are just across the street and offer several superbly equipped cardio and weight rooms as well as eight squash courts and an indoor basketball/badmington/volleyball court. A visit to the Malkin Athletic Center and the Murr Center requires a 10 minute walk but they offer olympics size swimming pools and a significant number of indoor as well as outdoor Tennis Courts.

All facilities are free for students.

Housing

Undergraduate students as well as incoming graduate students are usually accommodated in the dormitories and college houses around Harvard yard but studios and 1 bedroom apartments are also available through Harvard Affiliated Housing or can be rented privately and are certainly affordable on a graduate student stipend

Off Campus

You only have to step outside the campus gates to enjoy Cambridge's exciting cultural life and Boston downtown is only a short (10 minute) underground or bicycle ride away. The banks of the Charles River, which separates Cambridge from Boston, invite for pleasant walks and jogging excursions and the commuter rail will get you in less then an hour to many of the wonderful beaches that decorate the New England coast around the Boston area.
